Brain & Head

Migraines

Migraines are defined as a recurring neurological disorder that produce severe and typically pulsating headaches. Around two thirds of migraine cases run in families.

Patients who experience migraines will typically show symptoms of:

  • Pounding sensation in the head
  • Lasting for over 2 hours to up to a few days
  • Vomiting/Nausea
  • Occasionally preceded by aura(sensory warning) such as flashes of light or tingling  sensations.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes a person to undergo repeated seizures, or uncontrollable convulsions, over time. Seizures are episodes of disturbed brain activity that cause changes in attention or behavior.

Patients with epilepsy have symptoms that include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Temporary Confusion
  • Uncontrollable muscle spasms and movements
  • Absence of awareness

RISE Clinic Epilepsy Center

RCN Epilepsy Center was developed in response to the unexpected, overwhelming need in the community for epilepsy services, and the apparent lack of specialized centers in the area to support it. We continually work to source newer generations of antiepileptic drugs that have been shown to be more efficacious with fewer adverse effects. In collaboration with world-renowned neurosurgeons in Abuja and the U.S., RCN’s medical officer oversees the treatment and care of all patients through our epilepsy center.

Through the use of telecommunication technology, monthly refractory patient cases are presented and discussed by a diverse medical team, which minimally includes: RCN Medical Officer, Nigerian and U.S. based neurosurgeon, and specialized clinical pharmacist. Recommendations from the multidisciplinary care team is coordinated and carried out by RCN staff to ensure patients receive the most optimal care.

Our community based epilepsy program, the Nigerian Epilepsy Care Advancement Program (NECAP), provides assistance to low-income patients and families suffering from epilepsy.

We meet our goals by providing:

  • Clinical Assessment
  • Seizure Management
  • Health Education to Patient and Family
